Could you tell us why you decided to study at Vatel?
I was reviewing several hotel schools in Switzerland when I came across Vatel Mauritius in Quatre Bornes. After meeting with the Vatel team and Mr. Azema, I understood that I could obtain the same Bachelor’s in international Hotel Management as a hotel school in Switzerland but at more affordable fees. Also, Mauritius, in my opinion, offers far greater opportunities when it comes to internships, allowing to work in the best hotel brands in the world. Rich and deeply rooted hospitality are the core of Mauritius island which brings another reason to work and study here. I started my studies in March 2010 for Bachelor’s degree and graduated in 2013.
So you would say that Vatel lived up to your expectations?
Definitely – it has opened a lot of doors for me and gave me great skills to start my career. The combination of Practical Application Work and Internships is the best way to apply theory into practice, find out what suits one and also enables networking opportunities for future full-time placements
Where did you do your practical application work and internships?
In my first year, I did my Practical Applications and Internship at Four Points by Sheraton in Mauritius. For my second year, I did my Practical Applications at Royal Palm Beachcomber in Mauritius and my internship at One&Only The Palm in Dubai. During my last year I had practical application at The St. Regis Mauritius and internship at The Ritz-Carlton in Dubai which gave me a full-time placement after completion.
Can you tell us in detail what you do then?
I am currently the Assistant Director of Banquet & Group Sales at W Dubai – The Palm. I have been part of the preopening team and built the groups and events team from scratch including hiring, setting up the department, driving sales, budgets and ensuring successful events planning.
What do you think of Vatel opening in Bahrain?
Being the ambassador of the VATEL Club in UAE, I think it is fantastic to have a hotel school opened in Bahrain especially for the GCC community. Since there are no other hotel schools of this caliber in this region, not only will it create a brand awareness for the school but also attract a new generation of hotel professionals from the region. Since there are some many hotels in the GCC region, I do believe it should succeed.
How will you qualify the Hospitality & Tourism sector in the Middle East?
Service has overtaken many other industries and create a lot of jobs and career opportunities! With so many hotels and new openings around the world, candidates have opportunities to grow, work and travel as well as find a property which suits individual’s values and interests.
