Madagascan, Fitiavana Andriantseheno decided to study hotel management in her native country and started school at Vatel Madagascar in 2015.
The perfect blend of theoretical courses / practical application began: she had weeks of classroom courses and weeks d’hands-on professional experience in her school’s hotel and restaurant up until her 1st four-month internship which took place at the The Louvre d’Antananarivo Hotel.
As she knew that she had to go abroad for her second year’s six-month internship, Fitiavana decided to expand this experience: ‘I wanted to be independent as quickly as possible and challenged myself to living in a big city. With the Marco Polo program, I came to Vatel Paris for my second year with the goal of doing my internship in one of the capital’s beautiful palaces.”
From little towns in Normandy, to the Strasbourg Christmas Market, Fitiavana made the most of her year in France, exploring the country and appreciating the changes in the seasons and weather in Paris during the year. “I really liked the Economic Environment course, as I could understand the impact tourism has on the economy of a country by comparing Europe and Madagascar.
The practical application weeks also were really important for me as the clients in the Paris Vatel Restaurant are nothing like those in the Madagascar Vatel Restaurant. Just like the other “sophomores,” I had to supervise first year students, even though I myself was still a bit lost. But that didn’t last for long and my professors and classmates were always there for me.”
Constantly in touch with her Vatel Madagascar classmates, Fifivana was proud to tell them that she was accepted for her second year internship in the restauration division at the legendary Plaza Athenee. “I not only learned new professional techniques about the French art of hospitality during this internship, but above all, I learned to find my own place in a team.”
