From Antibes to Bahrain: in Esteban’s footsteps

Currently doing his internship at the Café Chantilly, which was founded in Bahrain by a Vatelien, Esteban Cerret tells us more about his first year at school and his international internship.

Choosing Vatel

I discovered Vatel Group from TV documentaries as well as the site and Vatel Lyon’s Open House Days, where I learned more about the curriculum.
I had always wanted to work as a manager in luxury hospitality, abroad. So I carefully chose my school: with its international reputation, its courses, its network and the mixture of theoretical courses and practical experience, Vatel seemed self-evident for me.

Discovering the hospitality industry

In my first Bachelor year, I discovered that the hospitality industry is based on thoroughness, helping others and team spirit. Values that I cultivate by taking part in Student Services and managing my 1st year classmates during their practical application weeks at the Vatel Restaurant. I worked in three famous hotels in Lyon and also took part in special events by participating in the Sopra Steria Open by Lyon Tennis Clubs, while acquiring the theoretical basics in hotel management, little by little.

Moving up the ladder

When I was a high school student, I worked as a waiter in summer. At Vatel, I did my first year’s internship in a four-star hotel, Le Val Thorens, where I worked in other domains: at the front desk, where I often spoke English, serving breakfast, working at the bar, and above all, in communication. Management trusted me to design its flyers and put in place other communication tools. I really appreciated their trust and all the freedom I had.
Thanks to the Vatel network, I was also able to work at the Bellesrives five-star hotel at Cap d’Antibes: the Human Resources Manager, Joanna Rodrigues, is a Vatelien, who hired me as captain for a summer job. A demanding job but a great one in a magical environment! I experienced what goes on in a luxury hotel during their peak months, with one event after another. With my Vatel courses and my previous internship, I knew I was becoming more and more professional. The proof: my manager often trusted me and gave me a lot of freedom.

A first international experience

I’m currently doing an internship with a classmate at the Café Chantilly in Bahrain, founded by Segolene Cretaux, a Vatelien. Working with someone you know is great when you go abroad.
I chose this internship among the ones Vatel Lyon proposed to me, to:

  • Perfect my English: it’s indispensable for my future projects.
  • Experience a new culture in an international framework: I really want to learn all the ins and outs about guests from the entire world.
  • Continue to learn about communication: I do a lot for Café Chantilly and I’m active on the web and do a lot of social networking. I’ve shot quite a few promotional clips.
  • Promote French knowledge and people-oriented skills abroad: sophistication, elegance, exigency and discretion.
  • Organize events: I’ve already presented French products at the French Embassy in Bahrain.

I feel like I’m a part of their team and am valued and involved in running this hotel.

Ten years from now, I’d like to manage a team in a luxury hotel, in a large city, like Sydney. Thanks to my “Vatel calling card,” I know that I’ll be able to work abroad in various up-market hotels before settling down someplace.
