What does your present job consist of?
I’m currently based in Milan where I’m working as Head Sommelier for the French pavilion, a job that was offered to me after only 3 months’ placement with the Comité Vins Rhône Alpes.
There, I was working mainly on special wine-related events during the months of May and June when the region is put in the spotlight.
That led me to work with Philippe Faure-Brac on creating the wine list and he recommanded me for this job.
In operational terms, I’m responsible for cellar management, training and events but I also represent French wines at the World Fair.
What do you plan to do when your contract comes to an end?
After this job, there are a number of very interesting possibilities.
- I could follow the Pavilion’s Director and be involved in the opening of international luxury hotels as a wine consultant.
- I could return to the position of sommelier at Philippe Faure-Brac in Paris.
- I could accept the job of project leader with the Comité Vins Rhône Alpes in Lyon and be responsible for creating a Rhône-Alpes wine library.
Does this reflect your professional plans for the future?
I’ve already had experience in the international hotel sector, particularly as a result of my course at Vatel, so this project is a continuation of my ideas for my future. Mobility is an advantage when it comes to opportunities, even if I have to make a few sacrifices. Milan is one example of that. My aim is to return to Lyon eventually, in a few years’ time, and work in a job that involves responsibilities.
You joined us for the last year of your MBA. Were you satisfied with your specialist courses?
The lecturers were excellent and the range of courses provided a really in-depth view of the complex worlds of winegrowing and production. Everything came up to my expectations and the teaching in English gave me with a real advantage when I was looking for a job.
Has this year given you a clearer idea of plans for the future?
The II WSM Master’s gives people who are passionate about wine great insight into every aspect of the industry. It led me to apply for a placement that I would never normally have considered as useful for my professional future. But it was well worth it – after just three months, I was given the opportunity that has brought me here.
What is the most significant thing you have taken away from your course at Vatel Bordeaux?
The emphasis on contact and assistance on a day-to-day basis, especially during the workshops. They were particularly instructive and helpful.
