Sports Event Project Manager

The Sports Event Project Manager plays a strategic role in designing, organizing, and ensuring the success of sports events. Their goal is to plan and oversee all operations, deliver an optimal experience for participants, clients, and partners, while respecting budgets and achieving event objectives.

Responsibilities

The Sports Event Project Manager coordinates all stages of a sports event and acts as the liaison between internal teams, partners, and external service providers. Key responsibilities include:

  • Event planning and design: define the concept, program, objectives, and budget of the event.
  • Team and vendor coordination: manage logistics, communications, ticketing, and partner teams, and supervise service providers (catering, security, audiovisual).
  • Operational management: organize and monitor installations, on-site logistics, participant flows, and safety.
  • Financial and strategic oversight: ensure budget compliance, optimize costs, and analyze the event’s profitability and impact.
  • Communication and promotion: collaborate with marketing and PR to promote the event and enhance brand visibility.
  • Evaluation and improvement: gather feedback from participants, partners, and sponsors, and propose improvements for future editions.

Required Skills

To succeed in this role, a Sports Event Project Manager must combine organizational, interpersonal, and strategic skills:

  • Project management and organization: plan, coordinate, and supervise complex teams and operations.
  • Communication and client relations: effectively interact with clients, partners, and sponsors.
  • Financial skills: manage budgets, analyze costs, and maximize event profitability.
  • Digital proficiency: event management software, office tools, and ticketing platforms.
  • Soft skills: rigor, creativity, initiative, stress management, and strategic thinking.
  • Foreign languages: English is essential for international events; a second language is a plus.

Education and Training

The role typically requires a Bachelor’s or MBA Vatel in Hospitality and tourism: programs focusing on customer service, VIP hospitality, and event organization.

Project management and leadership: specialization in team management and event coordination.

Previous experience in event planning, project management, or sports-related projects is highly valued.

Salary

The salary of a Sports Event Project Manager varies depending on the size and profile of the event or organization:

  • Entry-level: €2,500 – €3,500 gross per month
  • Mid-level: €3,500 – €5,500 gross per month
  • Senior / international events: up to €7,000 gross per month, including bonuses and incentives

Career Progression

After several years in this role, a Sports Event Project Manager can advance to:

  • Event Production Director
  • Head of Sports Events for an organization or club
  • Consultant in event management or sports marketing
  • Founder and manager of their own event management agency
